Again, Boko Haram destroys 2 TCN towers in Yobe

- From Habibu Idris Gimba, Damaturu

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have once again targeted critical infrastructure and vandalised two power towers conveying electricity from Gombe to Yobe and Borno states.

The insurgents brought down two Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) towers in Kasaisa village along the KasaisaDamaturu-Gujba road on Friday.

A source in Kasaisa village told Daily Trust on Sunday that the incident happened on Friday around 5.26pm when vandals suspected to be Boko Haram attacked the power facilities.

Daily Trust on Sunday learnt this is coming less than 40 days after TCN restored power in the state.

It was reported that in December last year, Governor Mai Mala Buni of the state directed the State Rural Electrification Board (REB) and Yola Electrical Distribution Company (YEDC) to restore the 33KV line from Potiskum to

Damaturu with immediate effect before TCN restored Gombe-Yobe-Borno line.

This destructive act has resulted in a widespread power outage, plunging the state capital and its environs into darkness.

This incident marks the second time in three months that such an attack has occurred, striking just one month after TCN had repaired the facility and restored power supply to the region.

When contacted, the Assistant Director, Public Relations of the Operation Lafiya Dole Sector 2 Damaturu, Captain Shehu Muhammad, confirmed the incident.

Recently, Boko Haram fighters escalated their attacks in four front-line areas; Gubja, Gulani, Geidam, and some parts of Damaturu, the state capital.

Residents of Damaturu said the recurring nature of these incidents underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect vital infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted power supply for the residents of Yobe State.
