2-month-old abandoned baby found in Lafia

A Good Samaritan has found a twomonth-old baby abandoned by a yetto-be identified woman in Angwan Maina area of Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

Daily Trust on Sunday learnt that the baby was found within some residentia­l houses behind the Correction­al Centre, opposite Government Secondary School Maina, Lafia, lying on the ground naked.

Narrating the incident to our correspond­ent, Mr. Yakubu Sule explained that he found the baby at about 11.30pm on Friday night.

An angry mob, at the weekend, swooped on a forklift operator in the Ojo area of Lagos after a drum of armoured cable he was said to be transloadi­ng from a container fell on a passerby, killing the victim on the spot.

The forklift operator was to move closer only to discover it was a baby.

According to him, he looked around the area in search of the mother but all efforts proved abortive.

He further said he took the baby home, which initially caused a serious debate between himself and his wife, because he had woken her up from sleep and pleaded that she breastfeed­s the baby in order to save its life.

“I, my wife and all our neighbours couldn’t sleep as the baby could not withstand the excessive heat and cried all through the night. I had to carry the baby and play with, and that was how it slept off.”

Yakubu Sule’s wife, Mrs Aisha Yakubu, said as a mother, she had to almost lynched by the angry mob, if not for the prompt arrival of some policemen from Ilemba Hausa Police Station.

The policemen came following a distress call that was received at the station about the incident.

It was learnt that the mob almost set the entire warehouse on fire, after accept to breast feed the baby because denying the baby breast milk might lead to sudden death.

The ward head of Angwan Maina, Lafia Local Government Area, Mallam Idris Muhammed, confirmed that the matter was reported to him at about 7.15am on Saturday by Sule, saying that the issue had been reported to the police as necessary measures were being taken to ensure the safety of the baby.

Efforts to get the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Ramhan Nansel, proved abortive as several calls to his mobile line did not connect and he did not reply to the text message sent to his mobile line as at the time of sending in this report.

The yet-to-be identified young man was confirmed dead in an undisclose­d hospital where he was rushed to.

A vulcanizer who is said to have witnessed the incident described it as callousnes­s on the part of the owner of the consignmen­t and the forklift operator.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident, said the matter was reported at the Ilemba Hausa Police Station by the manager of an electrical enterprise dealing in armoured cables.
