19 die, 49 injured in Kaduna, Ogun road accidents

At least 19 people died and 49 others injured in two separate accidents that happened in Kaduna and Ogun states at the weekend. In Kaduna, 13 travellers died and 40 others sustained injuries in a tragic accident that occurred at MRS Filling Station on Ahmadu Bello Way within Kaduna metropolis.

Daily Trust on Sunday gathered that the incident happened on Friday night around 11pm when a trailer with registrati­on number, STK 445 XA travelling from Kano State, conveying onions and humans on top of the goods, lost control and crashed.

The Kaduna State sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kabir Y. Nadabo, who confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday, attributed the cause of the crash to over-speeding and overloadin­g.

Nadabo was part of the team that conducted the rescue and clearance of the obstructio­n caused by the accident.

“An investigat­ion of the incident has revealed that 60 people were involved in the crash, 40 got injured, and 13 were deceased,” he said.

He explained further that the injured were conveyed to Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital for further treatment.

He said the driver of the trailer dumped it and ran away, adding that efforts are ongoing to find the owners of the vehicle.

He appealed to motorists to imbibe the culture and conduct of safe driving, particular­ly through townships and highways.

Similarly, at least six persons died, while nine others sustained injuries in separate road crashes between Friday and Saturday in Ogun State.

On Friday, two persons died while one other sustained injuries in an accident at Iyana Odogo on Ilaro-Owode road.

The spokespers­on of the FRSC in Ogun State, Florence Okpe, noted that the accident occurred at 6pm, involving a Mitsubushi car marked JJJ 854 JH and a truck with registrati­on number, T12224LA.

She explained that a total number of seven people were involved, which comprised four men and three women.

“One woman got injured while two men were killed from the crash. The suspected causes of the crash were obstructio­n and speed violation,” she said.

The FRSC spokespers­on added that the injured victim and the deceased were taken to General Hospital, Ilaro.

The sector commander, Anthony Uga, advised motorists to drive within the stipulated speed limit and always obey traffic rules and regulation­s.

Also, on Saturday, four persons were confirmed dead in two separate accidents on the Ijebu Ode-Ore road and Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Okpe stated that the first accident occurred at the Ogbere axis on the Ijebu Ode-Ore road, involving a Daf truck marked AYE 886 ZQ and a Volvo truck with registrati­on number, MUS 246 YH.

She explained that the suspected causes of the crash were route violation and speed violation.

“A total of five men were involved, three injured, while two others died. The injured victims were taken to the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode, while one of the corpses was handed over to the families of the deceased and the second one deposited at the General Hospital morgue Ijebu Ode,” she said.

She said the second crash occurred at 10:30am on Saturday in the Ogere axis after Verony on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Okpe explained that the lone accident, which was caused by excessive speed and loss of control involved a Toyota Camry marked BDG 526 JC.

She stated that the injured victims were taken to Idera Hospital, Sagamu for medical attention and the deceased were deposited at the same hospital morgue.
