- From Atika Balal, Katsina

Former political adviser to Governor Ibrahim Shehu Shema of Katsina State, Alhaji Nasiru Umar, has declared his interest in running for the governorship of Katsina State.

In a statement issued to newsmen in Abuja shortly after declaring, the seasoned politician described the need for sustainability of policies and programmes of the present administration as his main reason for deciding to present himself as one of the party’s aspirant for the 2015 gubernatorial elections.

Umar who has served under several committees under the PDP and coordinates several associations in Katsina State and across the country, said his experience as a grassroots politician is what is rightly required to return the PDP to its height of acceptability.

He informed newsmen that his declaration was a result of wide consultation with stakeholders in the state as well as across the length and breadth of the party spectrum. “I have been inundated with requests from various groups, organisations and communities from the state and beyond to declare my interest to aspire for the office of Governor of Katsina” He said.

Alhaji Nasiru added that his focus will be on strengthening the agricultural sector, education, employment generation to curb youth restlessness, accountability and infrastructural development.

He said the state has the potential to become the food basket of the nation if its numerous natural, solid and human resources are tapped for development.

‘As an experienced politician and member of the mining and geosciences association I know what abundant natural resources we have and I have the capacity and wherewithal to harness these resources for the betterment of our people,” He added

Umar then called on the people of Katsina State to throw their weight behind him and the PDP in order to take the state to its deserved position as a potential leader in the socio-economic development and growth of the nation.

He said the PDP deserves to be given the mandate again and again having served the state since the return of democracy with zeal, dedication and with numerous democratic dividends to show.
