Plateau ex-leg­is­la­tors call for sack­ing of SIECs

A group of ex-leg­is­la­tors, com­mis­sion­ers and lo­cal govern­ment chair­men in the All Pro­gres­sives Congress (APC) in Plateau State have called for the scrap­ping of State In­de­pen­dent Elec­toral bod­ies across the coun­try and stressed the need to re­visit the Jus­tice Uwais Elec­toral re­form Act in or­der to re­struc­ture INEC and em­power it to con­duct lo­cal govern­ment elec­tions.

The group in a state­ment by its cor­di­na­tor, Alex Kwap­noe said this has to be done other­wise democ­racy will con­tinue to suf­fer set­back at the lo­cal govern­ment level.

“If wishes of elec­torates at this level is not re­spected, it will soon ig­nite con­flict which will com­pound our cur­rent se­cu­rity chal­lenges. This should be a crit­i­cal agenda at the on­go­ing na­tional con­fer­ence.

On the party’s in­terim lead­er­ship in the state and the con­gresses un­der­way, the group con­grat­u­lated the en­tire in­terim man­age­ment com­mit­tee (IMC) un­der the lead­er­ship of Sen. JN Sha­gaya for “as­sid­u­ously work­ing and spread­ing the ac­cep­tance of the party in the state in the face of sev­eral chal­lenges and en­cour­aged them to be ac­tive in the af­fairs of the party.

“In or­der to give the party a solid base, mem­bers are strongly ad­vised to mo­bi­lize for cred­i­ble per­sons to con­test elec­tions dur­ing the con­gresses which is in the off­ing. How­ever, mem­bers should be or­derly and guard against the grand de­sign to in­fil­trate the con­gresses with moles of some prom­i­nent in­di­vid­u­als out­side the party,” he stated.
