Plateau ex-legislators call for sacking of SIECs
A group of ex-legislators, commissioners and local government chairmen in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State have called for the scrapping of State Independent Electoral bodies across the country and stressed the need to revisit the Justice Uwais Electoral reform Act in order to restructure INEC and empower it to conduct local government elections.
The group in a statement by its cordinator, Alex Kwapnoe said this has to be done otherwise democracy will continue to suffer setback at the local government level.
“If wishes of electorates at this level is not respected, it will soon ignite conflict which will compound our current security challenges. This should be a critical agenda at the ongoing national conference.
On the party’s interim leadership in the state and the congresses underway, the group congratulated the entire interim management committee (IMC) under the leadership of Sen. JN Shagaya for “assiduously working and spreading the acceptance of the party in the state in the face of several challenges and encouraged them to be active in the affairs of the party.
“In order to give the party a solid base, members are strongly advised to mobilize for credible persons to contest elections during the congresses which is in the offing. However, members should be orderly and guard against the grand design to infiltrate the congresses with moles of some prominent individuals outside the party,” he stated.
