Employers caution unions against picketing of power stations

- From Mohammed Shosanya, Lagos

The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has cautioned labour unions against picketing of electricity distribution companies on the ground of anti-labour activities.

The advise came on the heels of the shutdown of Jos electricity distribution company, last week, and planned picketing of others by the unions in the nation’s electricity sector.

Speaking in Lagos at the weekend, Director-General of NECA, Mr Olusegun Oshinowo, expressed shock over the development, saying it constituted a gross violation of the country’s labour laws.

He said since the Federal Government has accepted responsibilities for the payment of workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN),there was no rationale for the unions to threaten the new owners of the asset over compliance with the severance pay.
