Ar­gentina hit by Gago blow

Ar­gentina mid­fielder Fer­nando Gago is doubt­ful for the World Cup af­ter suf­fer­ing a left knee in­jury at the weekend which is ex­pected to side­line him for two months.

The 28-year-old for­mer Real Madrid man, who has won 47 caps for La Al­bice­leste, picked up the knock in Boca Ju­niors’ goal­less draw with Santa Fe on Sun­day.

A state­ment on club web­site­ca­ju­ read: “The mid­fielder suf­fered a grade two sprain in the left knee, with a par­tial le­sion of the me­dial col­lat­eral lig­a­ment, and will be im­mo­bilised for 15 days. The es­ti­mated re­cov­ery time is 60 days.”

Ar­gentina be­gin prepa­ra­tions for the World Cup on 20 May and play their first Group F match against Bos­nia-Herze­gov­ina on 15 June be­fore fur­ther first round games against Iran and Nigeria.
