School attack: Bauchi govt evacuates students
The Bauchi State government has evacuated female students currently writing their WAEC examinations from Government Girls Secondary School, Yana in Shira Local Government Area of the state.
Gunmen attacked the school on Sunday, set fire to staff homes and seized the principal’s car.
The state Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed Aminu, confirmed the evacuation of the students yesterday in an interview with Daily Trust.
Alhaji Ibrahim said the students were evacuated to enable government to renovate the school and that the exercise will last for three weeks.
“The state government ordered evacuation of the students to enable renovation work on the buildings destroyed commence, but the evacuation is temporary because they will only stay away for three weeks. The only students in the school now are the final year students writing WAEC exams because the JSS 1-3 and SSS 1-2 are on holidays so we want to use this period to renovate the destroyed building to enable them return to a conducive learning environment,” he said.
He added that adequate security measures have been put in place by the state government to ensure the security of not only the students of GGSS Yana, but all schools in Bauchi State.
