School at­tack: Bauchi govt evac­u­ates stu­dents

The Bauchi State govern­ment has evac­u­ated fe­male stu­dents cur­rently writ­ing their WAEC ex­am­i­na­tions from Govern­ment Girls Sec­ondary School, Yana in Shira Lo­cal Govern­ment Area of the state.

Gun­men at­tacked the school on Sun­day, set fire to staff homes and seized the prin­ci­pal’s car.

The state Com­mis­sioner for Ed­u­ca­tion, Al­haji Ibrahim Mo­hammed Aminu, con­firmed the evac­u­a­tion of the stu­dents yes­ter­day in an in­ter­view with Daily Trust.

Al­haji Ibrahim said the stu­dents were evac­u­ated to en­able govern­ment to ren­o­vate the school and that the ex­er­cise will last for three weeks.

“The state govern­ment or­dered evac­u­a­tion of the stu­dents to en­able ren­o­va­tion work on the build­ings de­stroyed com­mence, but the evac­u­a­tion is tem­po­rary be­cause they will only stay away for three weeks. The only stu­dents in the school now are the fi­nal year stu­dents writ­ing WAEC ex­ams be­cause the JSS 1-3 and SSS 1-2 are on hol­i­days so we want to use this pe­riod to ren­o­vate the de­stroyed build­ing to en­able them re­turn to a con­ducive learn­ing en­vi­ron­ment,” he said.

He added that ad­e­quate se­cu­rity mea­sures have been put in place by the state govern­ment to en­sure the se­cu­rity of not only the stu­dents of GGSS Yana, but all schools in Bauchi State.
