‘Africa needs permanent seat in security council’

- By Romoke W. Ahmad in Beijing, China

The Peoples Republic of China has reiterated its firm position in the reform of the United Nations Security Council saying it is a good idea and hoped that Africa will get a permanent seat to stop intimidation of the continent.

The Director General, African Department of China’s ministry of foreign affairs, Mr. Lu Shaye, said this in Beijing, China while addressing a group of African journalists.

“China has a firm position on the reform of the UN Security Council. We recognized it and it is good but we hope that Africa will get a permanent representation at the council to solve the historical intimidation of African countries,” Shaye said

He also accused Western powers of confusing African countries to achieve their personal goal saying that was why the Western powers are preventing Africa from getting a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.

He advised African countries to remain strong and united adding that “if Africa separate, other countries will take advantage of that which will undermine the unity of the continent.”

On what experience Africa can draw from China, Shaye said, “we don’t like to be a teacher to another country but African countries can look at our system and turn it around for their own good but not copying it directly because what is good for us might not be for the continent since we are face with different challenges.”

On their contribution to Africa, so far, he stated that China intended to train 30,000 workers from Africa between 2013 and 2015 as well as 7000 scholarships for African student during the same period.
