FG in­ducts 50 grad­u­ate in­terns in Abuja

The Federal Govern­ment, yes­ter­day, in­ducted 50 grad­u­ates in var­i­ous dis­ci­plines to un­der­take the grad­u­ate in­tern­ship scheme (GIS).

The in­duc­tion’s ori­en­ta­tion train­ing lessons in in­volved work eti­quette, per­sonal ap­pre­ci­a­tion and de­vel­op­ment and im­prov­ing em­ploy­a­bil­ity.

GIS is a com­po­nent of the Sub­sidy Rein­vest­ment and Em­pow­er­ment Pro­gramme (SURE-P) de­signed for grad­u­ates to be placed in in­ter­ested an or­gan­i­sa­tion where they can be men­tored to de­velop some skills.

The project di­rec­tor of GIS un­der the Federal Min­istry of Fi­nance, Mr. Peter. M Papka said: “This is the first time in the his­tory of our na­tion that GIS is placed on the pri­or­ity agenda of govern­ment to help ad­dress the chal­lenges of grad­u­ate un­em­ploy­ment. Our ed­u­ca­tional cur­ric­ula in higher in­sti­tu­tions as cur­rently de­signed, does not pro­vide for the em­ploy­ment needs for work place skills which ac­counts for un­em­ploy­able grad­u­ate.

“Agri­cul­ture, in­for­ma­tion tech­nol­ogy and com­mu­ni­ca­tion tech­nol­ogy (ICT), power, con­struc­tion, health, en­vi­ron­ment and san­i­ta­tion as well as fi­nan­cial lit­er­acy and in­clu­sion have been iden­ti­fied to pro­vide more win­dows of op­por­tu­nity to sup­port build­ing man­power through the GIS,” Papka said.
