15 ar­raigned over at­tack on Baraje’s res­i­dence

Fif­teen sus­pected hood­lums who al­legedly at­tacked the res­i­dence of a chief­tain of the All Pro­gres­sives Congress (APC) Al­haji Kawu Baraje were yes­ter­day ar­raigned be­fore an Ilorin mag­is­trate’s court.

They were said to have on April 23, 2014 crim­i­nally con­spired, armed with guns and other dan­ger­ous weapons, at­tempted to at­tack Baraje at his res­i­dence along Eruda/Baboko Road, Ilorin. Two people were shot while 14 ve­hi­cles were de­stroyed in the at­tack.

Com­mis­sioner of Po­lice, Am­brose Ais­abo, had on Fri­day last week pa­raded the sus­pects, say­ing the gang leader’s ar­rest paved way for the ar­rest of the 14 other mem­bers of the gang at their hide­out in Isale koko area in Ilorin. Ac­cord­ing to the po­lice, a search was con­ducted on the ac­cused and a gun, a bat­tle axe, ham­mer, charms, two wraps of weeds sus­pected to be In­dian hemp among oth­ers were dis­cov­ered.

The pros­e­cu­tor, Cor­po­ral Luk­man Ayenigba, ob­jected to their bail and urged the court to re­mand them in prison cus­tody pend­ing the out­come of in­ves­ti­ga­tion. The de­fence coun­sel, Bar­ris­ter Bola Olokoba, prayed the court to ad­mit them to bail pend­ing the out­come of in­ves­ti­ga­tion.

Mag­is­trate Bosede Adeyemo how­ever agreed with the sub­mis­sion of the de­fence and ad­mit­ted the ac­cused to bail at the sum of N100,000 and two sureties in like sum each. The case was ad­journed to May 5 for fur­ther men­tion.
