Kaduna lawmakers move to ban Achaba
Lawmakers at the Kaduna State House of Assembly yesterday adopted a report presented by it Committee on Judiciary on the ban of commercial motorcycles popularly known as Achaba in Kaduna town. Presenting the report, chairman of the committee, Kantiok I. Irimiya, said based on the committee’s findings, there was need to ban the operation of commercial motorcyclists in Kaduna, Zaria and Kafanchan towns for security reasons.
He however added that certain provisions of the bill need to be amended to take care of the lapses that may occur when the law eventually takes effect.
Kantiok further proposed that areas that are experiencing security challenges in the state should also be included in the bill. He listed them to include; Lere Local Government, Dogon Dawa - Kaduna road, Giwa Local Government, Farin Ruwa - Zaria road, Jos - Zaria road, Saminaka, Marharaba Yakawada - Kuyello and Birnin Gwari - Funtua road among others.
In their contributions, members of the House stressed the need for the bill to be taken seriously. Member representing Kubau in the House, Muntaka Zuntu, advised that MarabanRido, an area in Chikun Local Government Area be included in the bill, while urging the state government to as a matter of urgency make provision for tricycles to help reduce the suffering of the people when the law takes effect.
