Power tussle tears Nigerian community in Ghana

- From Kate Da Costa, Accra

Despite being disowned by the national executive of the All Nigerian Community (ANC) Ghana, the new executives of the Greater Accra chapter was formally inaugurated at the weekend.

With the inauguration of the new executive, the Nigerian community for the first time has a central regional body to complement the activities of the apex body.

Characteristic of the rancour that has bedevilled the highly polarized Nigerian community, its national president, Mr Moses Owarho the day preceding the inauguration, had sent a pungent message to the group to stop their plans.

Owarho had distanced himself from the greater Accra regional chapter, even as he threatened to use legal means to thwart the illegality.

“One of the actions we are taking is to alert security agencies to let them know about our concerns. It is an illegal body. We do not recognize the group. So the law enforcement organizations should be able to intervene. We intend following the due process to stop them from this illegality,” he said.

Notwithstanding the opposition from the central, the regional body went ahead with the inauguration ceremony. The president of the Greater Accra ANC, Alhaji Idris Usman described the occasion as epoch making and promised to work for the well-being of all Nigerians in the country.

“We want everybody on board, we can’t do it alone. We welcome everybody come back home. We are stakeholders,” he wooed Nigerians present.

There have always been allegations of high- handedness of the board of trustees by the incumbent, while the last two executives had been ousted for alleged financial impropriety.

Prince Emmanuel Okeson, chairman of the BoT accused Owarho of tinkering with the constitution of the ANC in order to elongate his tenure

“There is a process for changing a constitution. It was clearly stipulated; so far as the process was not followed anything that comes out of it is definitely null and void. We are all aware of the constitution, which brought Moses to power. As far as we are concerned that is the constitution that is valid,” he declared.

Another member of the BoT, Alhaji Musa Baba also accused Owarho of misappropriating the $10,000 and undisclosed amount of Ghana cedi, grant from the Nigerian High Commission.
