7 cops nabbed over death of politician

The Ondo State police command yesterday arrested seven policemen in Akure over their alleged involvemen­t in the death of a 50-year - old female politician, Mrs. Ronke Adelugba.

The suspects, Daily Trust gathered, were alleged to have beaten the woman to death in her house during a criminal raid.

Mrs. Adelugba was the women leader of the Accord Party in Ward 5, Akure South LGA.

Daily Trust learnt that the seven policemen had stormed the house at No. 1, Akinyemi Street, Akure, after searching a nearby bush for some boys believed to be smoking Indian hemp in the area.

It was further gathered that the policemen found the boys in her house and decided to arrest them but she resisted, saying only her children were in the house.

Mrs Adelugba was said to have been beaten hit with gun butt and she slumped and died.

The policemen then fled while concerned neighbours removed the corpse to Ala Police Station where the policemen came from, and later been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital mortuary.

Police spokesman, Wale Ogodo, who confirmed the incident, however said the woman started panting and died after the policemen left the house, adding that she was not killed by the policemen as being claimed by the family.

Ogodo said the command had opened investigat­ion into the death, adding that the policemen were assisting in the investigat­ion and an autopsy would be carried out on the deceased.
