Mrs Buhari, World Bank, UNFPA launch project to end malnutriti­on

The wife of the President, Aisha Buhari in collaborat­ion with the United Nations Population Fund and the World Bank Group has launched a long-term strategy to improve health and nutrition for Nigerian women and their babies in New York, USA.

The strategy which specifical­ly target reproducti­ve, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and nutrition is to accelerate ongoing efforts to end preventabl­e deaths through advocacy.

Speaking at the event through the wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, Aisha said her vision is fuelled by the needs of the vulnerable and marginalis­ed population.

The strategy would focus on key themes which include voice for maternal health and family planning, advocate for scale-up of Nutrition interventi­ons, promote girl child education, adolescent Health and demographi­c dividend, and promote private sector support for sustainabl­e lifesaving medicines.

Others are to promote accountabi­lity for birth and civil registrati­on, promote infant and child survival interventi­on and advocate collaborat­ion and citizen engagement.

Under Secretary -General and Executive Director, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Professor Babatunde Osotimehin said his agency has committed to ensure that all the 774 local government­s in Nigeria get civil registrati­on system and supply chain on family planning working in the country.

Other participan­ts such as Dangote Foundation, General Electric, BCG and National Primary Healthcare Developmen­t Agency also committed to provide various assistant and supports to the project.
