Mrs Buhari, World Bank, UNFPA launch pro­ject to end malnutrition

The wife of the Pres­i­dent, Aisha Buhari in col­lab­o­ra­tion with the United Na­tions Pop­u­la­tion Fund and the World Bank Group has launched a long-term strat­egy to im­prove health and nutri­tion for Nige­rian women and their ba­bies in New York, USA.

The strat­egy which specif­i­cally tar­get re­pro­duc­tive, ma­ter­nal, new­born, child and ado­les­cent health and nutri­tion is to ac­cel­er­ate on­go­ing ef­forts to end pre­ventable deaths through ad­vo­cacy.

Speak­ing at the event through the wife of the Vice Pres­i­dent, Mrs Do­lapo Os­in­bajo, Aisha said her vi­sion is fu­elled by the needs of the vul­ner­a­ble and marginalised pop­u­la­tion.

The strat­egy would fo­cus on key themes which in­clude voice for ma­ter­nal health and fam­ily plan­ning, ad­vo­cate for scale-up of Nutri­tion in­ter­ven­tions, pro­mote girl child ed­u­ca­tion, ado­les­cent Health and de­mo­graphic div­i­dend, and pro­mote pri­vate sec­tor sup­port for sus­tain­able life­sav­ing medicines.

Oth­ers are to pro­mote ac­count­abil­ity for birth and civil reg­is­tra­tion, pro­mote in­fant and child sur­vival in­ter­ven­tion and ad­vo­cate col­lab­o­ra­tion and citizen en­gage­ment.

Un­der Sec­re­tary -Gen­eral and Ex­ec­u­tive Di­rec­tor, United Na­tions Pop­u­la­tion Fund (UNFPA), Pro­fes­sor Ba­batunde Oso­time­hin said his agency has com­mit­ted to en­sure that all the 774 lo­cal gov­ern­ments in Nige­ria get civil reg­is­tra­tion sys­tem and sup­ply chain on fam­ily plan­ning work­ing in the coun­try.

Other par­tic­i­pants such as Dan­gote Foun­da­tion, Gen­eral Elec­tric, BCG and Na­tional Pri­mary Healthcare De­vel­op­ment Agency also com­mit­ted to pro­vide var­i­ous as­sis­tant and sup­ports to the pro­ject.
