NEWS Ek­iti re­con­sti­tutes coun­cil on pre­rog­a­tive of mercy

The Ek­iti State gov­ern­ment has re­con­sti­tuted Ad­vi­sory Coun­cil to the Gover­nor on Pre­rog­a­tives of Mercy.

Mem­bers of the Coun­cil in­clude the state At­tor­ney Gen­eral and Com­mis­sioner for jus­tice, Mr. Ajayi as chair­man, the So­lic­i­tor Gen­eral and Per­ma­nent Sec­re­tary in the State Min­istry of Jus­tice, Mr. Ba­batope Ojo, the Di­rec­tor of Public Pros­e­cu­tion (DPP), Mr. Gbenga Daramola and the Comptroller of Pris­ons, Ek­iti State Com­mand, Mr. Mustapha Atta.

Oth­ers are the Chief Imam of the Gov­ern­ment House, Al­haji Rafiu Fatai, the Gov­ern­ment House Chap­lain, Pas­tor Seyi Olu­sola, who dou­bles as the Se­nior Spe­cial As­sis­tant to the Gover­nor and the Di­rec­tor of Ad­min­is­tra­tion and Sup­ply, Mrs. Mar­garet Oye­bola as Sec­re­tary of the Coun­cil.

Speak­ing at the in­au­gu­ra­tion of the Coun­cil in Ado Ek­iti, the At­tor­ney Gen­eral and Com­mis­sioner for jus­tice, Mr. Owoseni Ajayi, said the com­mit­tee was re­con­sti­tuted to as­sist the gover­nor to ex­er­cise his dis­cre­tionary pow­ers in grant­ing state par­don to pris­on­ers.

Ajayi said the Ad­vi­sory Coun­cil would ad­vise the gover­nor on is­sues both­er­ing on par­don, respite, pun­ish­ment and com­mit­tal of sen­tence of con­victs, adding that the ges­ture is ex­pected to serve as an in­cen­tive to the in­mates to be of good be­hav­iour.

He re­it­er­ated the com­mit­ment of the Fayose-led ad­min­is­tra­tion to the for­mu­la­tion and im­ple­men­ta­tion of var­i­ous poli­cies and re­forms that would guar­an­tee safety of lives and prop­erty.
