FG urged to re­claim lost public space

The Ini­tia­tive for the Sup­port and Pro­mo­tion of Hu­man Shel­ter (ISPHS) has called on the fed­eral gov­ern­ment to re­claim all public spa­ces across the coun­try that have been con­verted to pri­vate uses.

of Op­er­a­tion, Desmond Chieswe said this yesterday in Abuja dur­ing the 2015 World Habi­tat day cel­e­bra­tion with the theme “Pen space for all” or­ga­nized by the Fed­eral Min­istry of Hous­ing and Ur­ban De­vel­op­ment.

He lamented the rate at which public open spa­ces meant for recre­ation and leisure have been cov­ered into build­ings, restau­rants, dump-sites, me­chanic work­shops mar­kets among oth­ers.

Per­ma­nent Sec­re­tary, Fed­eral Min­istry of Land, Hous­ing and Ur­ban De­vel­op­ment, Mr. Ge­orge A. Ossi, said the cel­e­bra­tion af­ford Nige­ria the op­por­tu­nity to re­fo­cus ef­forts at re­dress­ing all sub­tle and ob­vi­ous re­stric­tion to pop­u­lar ac­cess to public space, es­pe­cially in this era of public change.

The Per­ma­nent Sec­re­tary rep­re­sented by a di­rec­tor in the min­istry Arc. Sani Gi­daodu as­sured that the min­istry has com­mences the im­ple­men­ta­tion of key poli­cies like Na­tional Hous­ing Pol­icy, Na­tional Ur­ban De­vel­op­ment Pol­icy and Na­tion Build­ing Code, adding that they are in the process of pro­duc­ing na­tional hous­ing pol­icy to in­duce far-reach­ing re­form in land ad­min­is­tra­tion in the coun­try.
