Police declare NSCDC operative wanted over attempted murder

- From Abubakar Auwal, Sokoto

Former Area Commander of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Aliyu Jekada Yabo has been declared wanted by the Sokoto State Police Command for allegedly stabbing one Kasimu Danbaba in Wamakko town.

Daily Trust learnt that Yabo, a Chief Inspector of the Corps was suspended about six weeks ago following a petition by his family, over professional misconduct.

Narrating his ordeal, Danbaba said he and NSCDC operative were good friends before the relationship went sour a couple of years ago over some personal issues.

“He was like a boss and in-law to me because I married the younger sister to his ex-wife. Infact, he was the one that introduced me to her. However, before the wedding, he went to our in-law and asked him to stay action on the matter or he would divorce his daughter. He made good his threat after realising that the man was not ready to succumb. Since then, we have not been on talking terms,” he said.

Danbaba, who is recuperating in a hospital, said he received a call from an unknown person on Saturday around 11pm, and that he was asked whether he knew Aliyu Jekada. He said the person repeated the question several times after which he cut off the phone.

‘‘After cutting off the line, the fellow sent me a text message that he would be the cause of my death. I did not take the threat lightly, as I hurriedly reported the matter to the divisional headquarters of the NSCDC and the police, who asked me to come back in the morning for proper documentation’’, he said.

The victim added, “I came back from the police around 12 midnight, and around 1am Jekada jumped over my fence, walked into my room and stabbed me in the stomach. He wanted to stab me a second time, but my scream attracted my neighbours. I was alone in the house when it happened; my wife and children had travelled to Yabo to see my in-laws. When he heard movement of people, he quickly jumped over the fence and ran away’’.

Daily Trust gathered that the suspect drove to Wamakko from Yabo to carry-out the attack.

Confirming the incident, spokesman of the Sokoto State Police Command said they had declared the suspect wanted, assuring that he would be apprehended and prosecuted accordingly.

The Commandant of NSCDC, Alhaji Adamu Soma, said Jekada had not been seen for the past six weeks since his suspension from the service over a petition by his family, and professional misconduct.

Soja added that the command had been on his trail since then because of the cases.
