The Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Committee has treated and rehabilitated 30,000 psychiatric patients in the past nine years.

This was disclosed by chairman of the committee, Malam Lawal Maidoki.

He said a total of N140 million was spent on their treatment.

“Between 2014 and now, the committee has treated and rehabilitated over 7000 psychiatric patients with the sum of N36,000 paid monthly for each of the patients,” he said.

Maidoki said after treatment, the patients were empowered to start businesses.

He added that all the 85 subcommittees across the state had been asked to compile and submit list of psychiatric patients in their areas for treatment.

“Our hope is to rid the state of mentally ill people,” he added.

He advised relatives and members of societies to be their brothers’ keepers by keeping them away from illicit

admitted drugs.

He also called on the antidrugs agencies to redouble efforts on fighting drugs abuse and trafficking in the state while suggesting that an awareness campaign should be intensified by the three tiers of government.

He appealed to the state government to rehabilitate the Mamora Psychiatric hospital just as he thanked Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and former vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Professor Riskuwa Shehu, for their support.
