Sokoto Zakkat c’ttee treats 30,000 psy­chi­atric pa­tients

The Sokoto State Zakkat and En­dow­ment Com­mit­tee has treated and re­ha­bil­i­tated 30,000 psy­chi­atric pa­tients in the past nine years.

This was dis­closed by chair­man of the com­mit­tee, Malam Lawal Maidoki.

He said a to­tal of N140 mil­lion was spent on their treat­ment.

“Be­tween 2014 and now, the com­mit­tee has treated and re­ha­bil­i­tated over 7000 psy­chi­atric pa­tients with the sum of N36,000 paid monthly for each of the pa­tients,” he said.

Maidoki said af­ter treat­ment, the pa­tients were em­pow­ered to start busi­nesses.

He added that all the 85 sub­com­mit­tees across the state had been asked to com­pile and sub­mit list of psy­chi­atric pa­tients in their ar­eas for treat­ment.

“Our hope is to rid the state of men­tally ill peo­ple,” he added.

He ad­vised rel­a­tives and mem­bers of so­ci­eties to be their broth­ers’ keep­ers by keep­ing them away from il­licit

ad­mit­ted drugs.

He also called on the an­tidrugs agen­cies to re­dou­ble ef­forts on fight­ing drugs abuse and traf­fick­ing in the state while sug­gest­ing that an aware­ness cam­paign should be in­ten­si­fied by the three tiers of gov­ern­ment.

He ap­pealed to the state gov­ern­ment to re­ha­bil­i­tate the Mamora Psy­chi­atric hos­pi­tal just as he thanked Gover­nor Aminu Waziri Tam­buwal and for­mer vice Chan­cel­lor of Us­manu Dan­fodiyo Univer­sity, Sokoto, Pro­fes­sor Riskuwa Shehu, for their sup­port.
