Kaduna gives ultimatum on dogs, cat vaccination

- From Dickson S. Adama, Kaduna

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has given ultimatum to pet owners in the state to vaccinate them, saying any dog or cat that is not vaccinated will be killed.

The governor, who spoke yesterday in Kaduna at the launch of vaccination campaign against rabies in dogs and cats, said the government will also give vaccines to all its partners across the state to ensure that the exercise is a success.

Represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Manzo Daniel Maigari, Governor El-Rufai said the government will liaise with professionals to give a time frame that is realistic so that upon expiration of that time, law enforcement agencies will move in to enforce sanctions, which will include destruction of animals that are not vaccinated.

“It is important to know that this vaccination exercise commenced a few days ago but this official ceremony in important to create the necessary awareness. In flagging off this campaign, I want to say that any dog or cat that has been brought here will be vaccinated free of charge. And following this flag off, we will also give vaccines to all our partners across the state to ensure that this vaccination is a success. From today, all our veterinary clinics across the state and local government centers will also commence vaccination of dogs and cats. I call on pet owners to avail their dogs and cats for vaccination”, he said.
