‘Benue can generate N1.5bn monthly’

- From Hope Abah, Makurdi

Chairman of the Benue State Board of Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), Mrs. Mimi Atedze-Orubibi, has said that the N1.5 billion monthly revenue generation target set for the board by the state governor is achievable.

Orubibi, who spoke on Wednesday in Makurdi, when she formally assumed office as chairman of the board, expressed optimism that her team would work hard to boost revenue generation.

“We must work together to generate the N1.5 billion. In the next few days, the target would be shared among departments, individuals and local government councils. The government needs us to fill the gap created by dwindling price of oil revenue because federal accruals can no longer pay state workers. I am optimistic that we will meet the target,” she said.

The new chairman warned staff of the board to shun sharp practices, saying it will no longer be business as usual.

She maintained that her leadership would block leakages and fight corruption in the system irrespective of the personality involved.

She reminded the staff that the board is autonomous and as such can fire anyone who is lagging behind.

She further stated that welfare would be her priority.

Earlier, the out-going acting chairman of the board, Gabriel Asen, said he was in no doubt that Orubibi would excel in the assignment, given her background.
