- From Andrew Agbese, Kaduna

Two high profile polo teams, Keffi Ponies and Abuja Guards Rubicon are among the clubs that will challenge Kaduna El-Amin for Africa’s most prestigious polo trophy, the Georgian Cup at the 2015 Kaduna International Polo Tournament.

The tournament gallops off on October 31, 2015 to November 8 at the Ahmadu Yakubu Polo Ground, Murtala Mohammed Square in Kaduna.

Kaduna El-Amin are the defending champions, having won the cup in the last tournament.

Top polo players from across Africa are also expected to battle for the centuries old Georgian Cup, while top Nigerian polo stars would compete for the Emir of Katsina Cup, Nahco Cup, Unity Bank Cup and Governors Cup among others.

Kaduna polo captain, Baba Kyari who spoke at the cheque presentation night at the polo club in Kaduna at the weekend, said the three teams are among the teams that have registered for the annual tournament.

“We are going to have a competitive tournament in terms of Georgian Cup, some people have bought brand new Argentine horses to play. Kaduna El Amin, Keffi Ponies and Abuja Guards Rubicon have all registered for the 2015 Georgian Cup with another team that I don’t want to mention yet.

“There is no game of polo that is same, horses change, people change and some team that got beaten last year may want to play better, team are thinking of better ways to consolidate. The game is progressing in Kaduna Polo Club because we have more players than last year but like every sector we are also affected by the economic downturn,” Kyari said.

President of Kaduna Polo Club, Malam Suleiman Abubakar said the 2015 edition of the Kaduna Polo tournament would be interesting because a lot of initiatives have been introduced to the tourney.

About N28 million was received from sponsors and donors of the competition with Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna states and a telecommunication company doling out N5 million each.
