Court re­fuses killer cop bail

AC h i e f Mag­is­trate’s Court in Ebute-Metta, Lagos yes­ter­day re­fused the bail ap­pli­ca­tion filed by a po­lice cor­po­ral who was docked for al­legedly killing a woman in Ije­gun area of Lagos.

The 28-year-old Cor­po­ral Musiliu Aremu al­legedly killed the mother of four, Com­fort God­win Sun­day, on Septem­ber 16 over her com­mer­cial tri­cy­cle op­er­a­tor hus­band’s re­fusal to give some money to Aremu and his col­leagues from the Ish­eri-Osun Po­lice Sta­tion who manned an il­le­gal road block that night.

The ac­cused al­legedly fired the gun­shot that killed Com­fort in the pres­ence of her chil­dren and hus­band who was also in­jured dur­ing the in­ci­dent. He was ear­lier ar­raigned on Septem­ber 18, on a two-count charge bor­der­ing on mur­der and caus­ing griev­ous body harm.

At the re­sumed hear­ing of the case be­fore Mag­is­trate Fo­lashade Bo­toku, the pros­e­cu­tor, God­win Osuyi, in­formed the court that he had filed an ap­pli­ca­tion for the re­mand of the ac­cused in pri­son cus­tody.

Mag­is­trate Bo­toku granted the ap­pli­ca­tion and or­dered that the ac­cused be re­manded in pri­son cus­tody for the next 30 days pend­ing the le­gal ad­vice from the State Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tion (DPP).

She also re­fused the bail ap­pli­ca­tion of the ac­cused and ad­journed the case till Novem­ber 25.

Cor­po­ral Musiliu Aremu had been in the cus­tody of the State Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tion Depart­ment of the Lagos State Po­lice Com­mand in Panti, Yaba be­fore he was trans­ferred to pri­son.
