Court refuses killer cop bail

AC h i e f Magistrate’s Court in Ebute-Metta, Lagos yesterday refused the bail applicatio­n filed by a police corporal who was docked for allegedly killing a woman in Ijegun area of Lagos.

The 28-year-old Corporal Musiliu Aremu allegedly killed the mother of four, Comfort Godwin Sunday, on September 16 over her commercial tricycle operator husband’s refusal to give some money to Aremu and his colleagues from the Isheri-Osun Police Station who manned an illegal road block that night.

The accused allegedly fired the gunshot that killed Comfort in the presence of her children and husband who was also injured during the incident. He was earlier arraigned on September 18, on a two-count charge bordering on murder and causing grievous body harm.

At the resumed hearing of the case before Magistrate Folashade Botoku, the prosecutor, Godwin Osuyi, informed the court that he had filed an applicatio­n for the remand of the accused in prison custody.

Magistrate Botoku granted the applicatio­n and ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody for the next 30 days pending the legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutio­n (DPP).

She also refused the bail applicatio­n of the accused and adjourned the case till November 25.

Corporal Musiliu Aremu had been in the custody of the State Criminal Investigat­ion Department of the Lagos State Police Command in Panti, Yaba before he was transferre­d to prison.
