Hope for orthopedic patients, as new treatment technique debuts soon

Anew form of treatment that shows promise for people suffering from joint, knee and other bone disorders will soon be in the country.

The treatment is also expected to help people who cannot afford to travel abroad for treatment to receive the treatment in Nigeria at relatively affordable rates.

The usual bone and joint operations, or total knee replacemen­t for patients are usually expensive says regional chief executive officer , West Africa of the Orthopaedi­c Specialty Hospital, Samir Shaker Ahmed .

“Several medical instrument­s are used and the patient may not be able to move for about three months, and the patient stays for six hours under anesthesia but with the new technique the patient can be supported to move within three hours,” he said.

He explained that the new technique measures exact joint of the patient based on CT scan an involves uses of computer and software invented by SurgiNovi, a British company.

He said professor and head of the orthopedic department of October 6 university, Cairo, Egypt Prof. Mahmoud Hafez will soon establish a bone and joint centre in Nigeria through his bone and joint centre in Egypt in collaborat­ion with SurgiNovi .

SurgiNovi invented the total knee, hip and other joint operation technique will does not require much equipment, shortens time for operation and minimizes risk of operation.

Speaking with this reporter on phone from Egypt, Prof Mahmoud Hafez said the technique is a patient specific template for joint replacemen­t, spine and bone deformitie­s and custom made guide that can be used for surgical operations for arthritis , broken bone infection, spine deformitie­s and bone tumour.

Hafez who is a consultant arthroplas­ty surgeon at NHS hospital UK, examiner SICOT Diploma World Orthopaedi­c Organisati­on, Belgium, a delegate of Egypt in Internatio­nal federation of inventors Associatio­n, Hungary, among others is also an editor and reviewer to few orthopedic, medical and scientific journals and institutes worldwide.
