Rape of minors on the rise in Jigawa

Incidents of the rape of minors are on the increase in Jigawa State. Available record indicates that in the last three years, there is a total of 87 rape cases.

The state commander of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Mohammed Gidado Fari, gave the statistics while speaking with Daily Trust. He said that within the period under review, rape cases stood at 17 while 70 cases of defilement of children between seven to 12 years were recorded.

Breaking down the statistics, the commander further said that in 2013, reported rape cases in the state was eight while defilement was put at 38. In 2014, the state command of NSCDC recorded six cases of rape while defilement stood 28. In 2015, from January to September, three cases of rape were recorded while 18 cases of defilement were also recorded.

He said, “All the 87 suspected rapists have been prosecuted, and conviction was secured on all the cases. Many of the offenders are serving various jail terms.”

Fari further stated that in the last quarter, his command recorded 232 criminal cases, adding that out of the number, 69 were prosecuted, 51 conviction secured and two others deposed.

Also speaking,

the

police public relations officer in the state, ASP Abdul Jinjiri said the most common crime in the state was theft, mostly of animals.

He said that in the first quarter of this year, police recorded 84 theft cases across the 27 local government areas, adding that 72 were prosecuted while conviction was secured on 45 cases.
