Rape of mi­nors on the rise in Ji­gawa

In­ci­dents of the rape of mi­nors are on the in­crease in Ji­gawa State. Avail­able record in­di­cates that in the last three years, there is a to­tal of 87 rape cases.

The state com­man­der of the Nige­rian Se­cu­rity and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Mo­hammed Gi­dado Fari, gave the statis­tics while speak­ing with Daily Trust. He said that within the pe­riod un­der re­view, rape cases stood at 17 while 70 cases of de­file­ment of chil­dren be­tween seven to 12 years were recorded.

Break­ing down the statis­tics, the com­man­der fur­ther said that in 2013, re­ported rape cases in the state was eight while de­file­ment was put at 38. In 2014, the state com­mand of NSCDC recorded six cases of rape while de­file­ment stood 28. In 2015, from Jan­uary to Septem­ber, three cases of rape were recorded while 18 cases of de­file­ment were also recorded.

He said, “All the 87 sus­pected rapists have been pros­e­cuted, and con­vic­tion was se­cured on all the cases. Many of the of­fend­ers are serv­ing var­i­ous jail terms.”

Fari fur­ther stated that in the last quar­ter, his com­mand recorded 232 crim­i­nal cases, adding that out of the num­ber, 69 were pros­e­cuted, 51 con­vic­tion se­cured and two oth­ers de­posed.

po­lice pub­lic re­la­tions of­fi­cer in the state, ASP Ab­dul Jin­jiri said the most com­mon crime in the state was theft, mostly of an­i­mals.

He said that in the first quar­ter of this year, po­lice recorded 84 theft cases across the 27 lo­cal gov­ern­ment ar­eas, adding that 72 were pros­e­cuted while con­vic­tion was se­cured on 45 cases.
