IITA moves to ensure high-yielding crops production
Ibrahim Musa Giginyu, Kano International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has revealed that it is implementing a Syngenta collaboration project aimed at identifying, adapting and making available to Nigerian farmers highyielding and superior maize and vegetable hybrids.
This was disclosed by IITA Plant Breeder Dr. Baffour Asafo-Adjei during farmer’s field day held at IITA Farm, Wase, Minjibir Local Government Area of Kano State, to showcase performance of new vegetable varieties.
According to him, the project is a joint efforts by both organisations aimed at improving and promoting cost-effective production packaged for crops like maize, tomato, sweet pepper and cabbage as a measure of ensuring increase in farmers’ yields and incomes from cultivating these hybrids.
Dr. Asafor-Adjei also stated that under the agreement, variety trials will be conducted at IITA sites in Nigeria using Syngenta’s hybrid seeds for the selected crops, using crop protection packages and standard crop production protocols.
