IITA moves to en­sure high-yield­ing crops pro­duc­tion

Ibrahim Musa Giginyu, Kano In­ter­na­tional In­sti­tute of Trop­i­cal Agri­cul­ture (IITA) has re­vealed that it is im­ple­ment­ing a Syn­genta col­lab­o­ra­tion project aimed at iden­ti­fy­ing, adapt­ing and mak­ing avail­able to Nige­rian farm­ers high­yield­ing and su­pe­rior maize and veg­etable hy­brids.

This was dis­closed by IITA Plant Breeder Dr. Baf­four Asafo-Ad­jei dur­ing farmer’s field day held at IITA Farm, Wase, Min­jibir Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Area of Kano State, to show­case per­for­mance of new veg­etable va­ri­eties.

Ac­cord­ing to him, the project is a joint ef­forts by both or­gan­i­sa­tions aimed at im­prov­ing and pro­mot­ing cost-ef­fec­tive pro­duc­tion pack­aged for crops like maize, tomato, sweet pep­per and cab­bage as a mea­sure of en­sur­ing in­crease in farm­ers’ yields and in­comes from cul­ti­vat­ing th­ese hy­brids.

Dr. Asafor-Ad­jei also stated that un­der the agree­ment, va­ri­ety tri­als will be con­ducted at IITA sites in Nige­ria us­ing Syn­genta’s hy­brid seeds for the se­lected crops, us­ing crop pro­tec­tion pack­ages and stan­dard crop pro­duc­tion pro­to­cols.
