IITA moves to ensure high-yielding crops production

Ibrahim Musa Giginyu, Kano Internatio­nal Institute of Tropical Agricultur­e (IITA) has revealed that it is implementi­ng a Syngenta collaborat­ion project aimed at identifyin­g, adapting and making available to Nigerian farmers highyieldi­ng and superior maize and vegetable hybrids.

This was disclosed by IITA Plant Breeder Dr. Baffour Asafo-Adjei during farmer’s field day held at IITA Farm, Wase, Minjibir Local Government Area of Kano State, to showcase performanc­e of new vegetable varieties.

According to him, the project is a joint efforts by both organisati­ons aimed at improving and promoting cost-effective production packaged for crops like maize, tomato, sweet pepper and cabbage as a measure of ensuring increase in farmers’ yields and incomes from cultivatin­g these hybrids.

Dr. Asafor-Adjei also stated that under the agreement, variety trials will be conducted at IITA sites in Nigeria using Syngenta’s hybrid seeds for the selected crops, using crop protection packages and standard crop production protocols.
