Winners emerge at Oxfam’s Female Food Hero Award
Abdullateef Salau Winners have emerged at the Oxfam’s 2015 Female Food Hero Award, which aimed at identifying and rewarding the most outstanding small scale women farmers that have demonstrated outstanding entrepreneurial spirit and best practice.
The winners are Dorcas Azenda, overall winner, Ngavere Jande, second runner up and Lembac Gafa, who came third position. The trio, all from Benue State, successfully bid for and won N250,000, N200,000 and N150,000 respectively.
According to Oxfam’s Research Policy & Advocacy Coordinator, Mr. Abdulazeez Musa, the women were among the over 4,000 who applied for the award. They were chosen after being subjected to screening and performed outstandingly.
While presenting the prize to the winners, wife of Benue State Governor, Mrs. Eunice Ortom, expressed concern that women efforts were not appreciated despite their significant contribution to Nigerian economy through agriculture.
She, therefore, lauded the organisers of the event and appealed for the elimination of seeming barriers against women development to give the opportunity to emerge stronger in the business sector.
