Win­ners emerge at Ox­fam’s Fe­male Food Hero Award

Ab­dul­la­teef Salau Win­ners have emerged at the Ox­fam’s 2015 Fe­male Food Hero Award, which aimed at iden­ti­fy­ing and re­ward­ing the most out­stand­ing small scale women farm­ers that have demon­strated out­stand­ing en­tre­pre­neur­ial spirit and best prac­tice.

The win­ners are Dor­cas Azenda, over­all win­ner, Nga­vere Jande, sec­ond run­ner up and Lem­bac Gafa, who came third po­si­tion. The trio, all from Benue State, suc­cess­fully bid for and won N250,000, N200,000 and N150,000 re­spec­tively.

Ac­cord­ing to Ox­fam’s Re­search Pol­icy & Ad­vo­cacy Co­or­di­na­tor, Mr. Ab­du­lazeez Musa, the women were among the over 4,000 who ap­plied for the award. They were cho­sen af­ter be­ing sub­jected to screen­ing and per­formed out­stand­ingly.

While pre­sent­ing the prize to the win­ners, wife of Benue State Gover­nor, Mrs. Eu­nice Or­tom, ex­pressed con­cern that women ef­forts were not ap­pre­ci­ated de­spite their sig­nif­i­cant con­tri­bu­tion to Nige­rian econ­omy through agri­cul­ture.

She, there­fore, lauded the or­gan­is­ers of the event and ap­pealed for the elim­i­na­tion of seem­ing bar­ri­ers against women de­vel­op­ment to give the op­por­tu­nity to emerge stronger in the busi­ness sec­tor.
