Bayelsa: Mother of Sylva’s run­ning mate ab­ducted

Ahead of the De­cem­ber 5 gov­er­nor­ship elec­tion in Bayelsa state, gun­men have kid­napped the 103- yearold mother of Mr.

Wil­ber­force Igiri, run­ning mate of the All Pro­gres­sive Congress (APC) gov­er­nor­ship can­di­date in Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva.

Daily Trust learnt that the gun­men whisked the woman away in the wee hours of yes­ter­day from her home lo­cated at Foropa, in South­ern Ijaw Lo­cal gov­ern­ment Area. They shot spo­rad­i­cally to scare away passersby.

The de­vel­op­ment has thrown panic into the camp of the APC in the state, even as ob­servers are di­vided on whether the in­ci­dent is po­lit­i­cally mo­ti­vated.

APC sup­port­ers and other sym­pa­thiz­ers have been troop­ing to the res­i­dence of the son of the woman, and the run­ning mate to Sylva, sit­u­ated off Ox bow road, Swali in Ye­nagoa.

As at the time of fil­ing this re­port how­ever, Wil­ber­force who is the el­dest son of the woman had not con­firmed the de­vel­op­ment.

No group has claimed re­spon­si­bil­ity, nor made any con­tact with the fam­ily.

The spokesper­son of the state po­lice com­mand, Asinim Bautswat said the com­mand was yet to be briefed on the in­ci­dent.
