NIMC: Only 10m Nige­ri­ans have na­tional ID num­bers

The Na­tional Iden­tity Man­age­ment Com­mis­sion (NIMC) yes­ter­day said only 10mil­lion Nige­ri­ans have so far been reg­is­tered in the on­go­ing ex­er­cise which is ex­pected to end by Jan­uary.

NIMC’s Di­rec­tor Gen­eral, Bar­ris­ter Chris Oyen­e­me­nam who dis­closed this in Abuja yes­ter­day at the 10th an­niver­sary of Life­line Care As­so­ci­a­tion said the na­tional iden­tity sys­tem would im­prove the se­cu­rity sit­u­a­tion and save lives of Nige­ri­ans.

He urged Nige­ri­ans to reg­is­ter and col­lect their iden­tity num­bers to avoid be­ing missed out in the ex­er­cise.

Ear­lier, Chair­man, Na­tional Hu­man Rights Com­mis­sion (NHRC) Pro­fes­sor Chidi Odinkalu said na­tional iden­ti­fi­ca­tion is the right of ev­ery Nige­rian and gov­ern­ment has no right to shut out any­one.
