Motorcyclist arrested over robbery

-

Police have arrested a 19-year-old Umar Ali for allegedly attacking and robbing an elderly man who had just withdrawn money from a bank in Kubwa.

A witness, vice chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Works, Kubwa branch, Mr. Segun Abiodun, told our reporter that the elderly man who withdrew what looked like huge sums of money from a bank at Federal Housing Kubwa was violently attacked and robbed by two men on okada as he was coming out from the bank.

“The money was inside a black nylon bag when they took the money from him and the old man started shouting and crying. Having seen what happened, our members started pursuing the criminals up to Gwarinpa Modern City.

“Our men also contacted the police and the police patrol van joined in the chase and when they realized that all the exit points had been blocked, the man who took the money, jumped off from the motorcycle and escaped and I used my car to block the okada rider who was subsequently arrested and his motorcycle impounded by the police,” he said.

When the Kubwa divisional police officer, Chief Superintendent Nurudeen Sabo, was contacted, he confirmed the arrest and stated that the suspect was originally from Gwoza but has been squatting in Abuja since insurgents sacked his home town last year.

He said the suspect confessed that they came all the way from Area 1 and that he normally meets the other criminal that escaped in a beer parlour where they discussed their robbery plans.

The Kubwa police chief hinted that the case has been transferred to State Criminal Investigative Department for investigation.
