Jigawa, WACOT partner on sesame production
The collaboration between Jigawa State government and WACOT Ltd, will boost sesame production, Daily Trust gathered.
This is because the company has assured that about three million sesame farmers in the state of ready-made market for the product.
Managing Director of Jigawa State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (JARDA), Gambo Ibrahim, said this in Gumel, headquarters of Gumel Local Government Area, during a field day project for educating sesame farmers.
He said the coming on board of WACOT, has solved the problem of marketing and pricing of sesame produce in the state.
The MD, who was represented by the Director Technical Services, Mohammed Ahmad, said about three million hectares of land is being used for the production of sesame in the state.
He said: “The Sesame produced in Jigawa State has been adjudged the best in term of quality in the world. Therefore, in order to improve on the output and its quality, local farmers must be educated on the application of modern farming techniques.
The state government is collaborating with WACOT Ltd for the provision of quality seeds and competitive market price. The collaboration helps in improving the value added chain for the production of sesame crop in the state”.
In his remarks, the General Manager of WACOT Ltd, Subirkumar P. Dey, said his company is basically an agric business enterprise with a mission to promote sustainable agricultural business in West Africa through empowering famers.
“We are into collaboration with Jigawa State government in the area of Sesame production. We are encouraged with high level commitment by the government as well as the interest demonstrated by farmers on the project,” he said.
Speaking to Daily Trust, representative of Sesame famers, Musa Aminu commended WACOT Ltd, for the collaboration, saying, small and major farmers have started benefitting from the collaboration already.
