NEMA hands over relief materials to Anambra

-

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has released assorted bags of food and non-food items to Anambra State Government as part of strategic supply to stockpile in its strategic reserve to boost the state government’s efforts in disaster preparedness.

Presenting the items, the Director-General of NEMA, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Sidi said the items were approved and delivered to the state by the Federal Government to support the state’s efforts to strategically stockpile food and non-food items as a preparation against NIMET flood prediction.

Alhaji Sidi said that NEMA is willing to support states that demonstrate serious commitment to disaster preparedness programme like Anambra and urged other states to be more serious about disaster risk management, even as he noted that this year’s prediction of heavy flooding fell short of the heightened fear of a massive deluge.

He revealed that Anambra State demonstrated its commitment to disaster risk reduction by going a step further to strategically stockpile drugs, food, and non-food items that could sustain internally displaced persons for several days before help could start coming from elsewhere.

Receiving the relief items, Governor Obiano who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Daniel Ezeanwu appreciated the dedication of NEMA to reducing disaster risks, observing that the situation calls for vigilance even in the face of the flood that never came.
