A hundred unemployed graduates who have completed their National Youth Service Corps, are presently undergoing the Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS) training in Rivers State.

The programme is organized by the GIS Department of Federal Ministry of Finance and is being executed in the state by Okunato Ventures Ltd with the aim of equipping the interns with graduate skills that will make them prospective employers of labour.

According to a statement from GIS, the scheme’s director, represented by Mr. Aremu Najeemo, stated that the one year training will enable interns have their experiences reviewed in order to assess their progress for entry into their planned business or career, adding that the interns will be guided in planning their career or starting the business of their interest.

In Kebbi state, about 94 graduates had undergone the internship and mentoring training at various organizations in the state.

A guest speaker at the event and Kebbi State Director of Education Resources Centre, Alhaji Ibrahim Sani Bena, thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing the Graduate Internship Scheme to continue as the interns have played significant role in bringing education to many rural schools in the state.

He gave example of Mairairai Junior Secondary School, which had just the principal to teach in the school and which was grossly inadequate to meet the needs of the community but with the Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS),the school now has four interns, who have contributed to empowering and equipping the pupils.

Director of the Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS) in the Federal Ministry of Finance, Mr. Peter Papka, who was represented by Mrs. Esther Gandu Tanko, commended the graduating interns for their contributions to the state and enjoined them to practise all they have been equipped with.
