500 PLWD un­dergo free skill ac­qui­si­tion train­ing in Nnewi

Over 500 per­sons liv­ing with dis­abil­i­ties in Nnewi, Anam­bra State are cur­rently un­der­go­ing a free in­ten­sive skill ac­qui­si­tion train­ing un­der the BINA foun­da­tion.

The train­ing, which in­cludes com­puter lit­er­acy for the blind, cater­ing ser­vices and ho­tel man­age­ment, shoe and bag mak­ing, bead mak­ing, com­puter and elec­tron­ics train­ing, soap and cos­me­tol­ogy and fash­ion de­sign­ing among others, runs be­tween three months to two years de­pend­ing on the choice of the ben­e­fi­ciary.

Ad­dress­ing the par­tic­i­pants the oc­ca­sion, the former ex­ec­u­tive chair­man of Nnewi North Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Area, Amobi Chik­wendu, said BINA was poised to en­sure peo­ple with dis­abil­i­ties lived their dreams through em­pow­er­ment train­ing.

He said the foun­da­tion, es­tab­lished six years ago, had pos­i­tively im­pacted on a lot of peo­ple in its Enugu chap­ter and de­cided to ex­tend the ges­ture to Nnewi.

While ex­plain­ing that the group was not known at for dol­ing out money to peo­ple, the former lo­cal gov­ern­ment boss main­tained that the foun­da­tion, through its vast con­tacts, was able to get jobs for vul­ner­a­ble youths while those in need of med­i­cal at­ten­tion are treated at no cost.

Also speak­ing, the project fa­cil­i­ta­tor, Mrs Chioma Chik­wendu, said the ben­e­fi­cia­ries would be given a starter pack­age at the com­ple­tion of the train­ing, adding that the foun­da­tion would mon­i­tor the grad­uands and their progress so as to sup­port them where nec­es­sary.
