Confusion as multiple-storey building ‘collapses’ in Oko Poly

- From Emma Elekwa, Awka

Tension was high yesterday at the permanent site of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Orumba North, Anambra State when a section of a multiple storey building under construction allegedly collapsed in the early hours of the day.

Daily Trust gathered that the incident took place around 3am when workers had all left the building site meant for the Public department construction.

A student who witnessed the incident, said the building collapsed suddenly due to what he described as overload.

Another indigene of Oko community who preferred anonymity, and who said his house was in front of the ‘collapsed’ building, said, “The building collapsed this morning. It is the Public Administration building of Administration undergoing the Polytechnic. They are now saying no building collapsed. The Public Relations Officer of the Institution, Obini Onuchukwu, said the management pulled down the section to effect corrections, for which reason it could not be said to be a collapse.

“Management pulled it down to effect corrections. The entire area was cordoned off and students were asked to give way to avoid any calamity,” he said.
