Rob­bers kill preg­nant woman in Cal­abar

Sus­pected armed rob­bers re­port­edly robbed and killed a preg­nant woman, Mrs. Chid­inma Ejike Obiechina, close to her pro­vi­sion shop in Ikot Nke­bre area of Cal­abar.

The hus­band, Ejike Obiechina Echem, con­firmed the in­ci­dent to Daily Trust in Cal­abar.

Echem said, “My wife closed the shop at few min­utes to 8.00p.m. and was strolling down to the house when she was at­tacked by two men, who ini­tially tried to snatch her hand bag con­tain­ing money for the en­tire sales for the day was but she held strongly onto it.

“In the process, they hit her on her belly and she fell to the groud and rob­bers took off with her hand bag.

“I was com­ing back from work at that same time. What I heard was the cry of pain and call for help. I rushed to where she was, picked her up and rushed her to the hos­pi­tal where she died.”

He said his wife, who was due to de­liver later this month, left be­hind two young chil­dren.

The corpse of late Mrs Obiechina has been de­posited at the Uni­ver­sity of Cal­abar Teach­ing Hos­pi­tal mor­tu­ary.

Also, a 35-year-old suya seller, Habibu Maude, was re­port­edly killed at his suya spot along White House Street in Cal­abar at the week­end.

The de­ceased, a fa­ther of four, who hailed from Tangaza Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Area of Sokoto State, was re­port­edly robbed and shot dead by the hood­lums.

The Sec­re­tary of Meat ( suya) Sell­ers at Suya Ar­cade in Cal­abar, Malam Mustapha Yusuf, ex­pressed shock over the bru­tal mur­der of their col­league.

The Hausa com­mu­nity in Cal­abar is said to now live in fear due to in­ces­sant at­tacks on their mem­bers es­pe­cially suya sell­ers who they claim are now tar­geted by hood­lums.

Po­lice Pub­lic Re­la­tions Of­fi­cer in the state, ASP Irene Ugbo, said they were yet to be in­formed about the two in­ci­dents but that their men have de­vised strate­gies to con­tain ris­ing crime wave in the state.
