Robbers kill pregnant woman in Calabar

Suspected armed robbers reportedly robbed and killed a pregnant woman, Mrs. Chidinma Ejike Obiechina, close to her provision shop in Ikot Nkebre area of Calabar.

The husband, Ejike Obiechina Echem, confirmed the incident to Daily Trust in Calabar.

Echem said, “My wife closed the shop at few minutes to 8.00p.m. and was strolling down to the house when she was attacked by two men, who initially tried to snatch her hand bag containing money for the entire sales for the day was but she held strongly onto it.

“In the process, they hit her on her belly and she fell to the groud and robbers took off with her hand bag.

“I was coming back from work at that same time. What I heard was the cry of pain and call for help. I rushed to where she was, picked her up and rushed her to the hospital where she died.”

He said his wife, who was due to deliver later this month, left behind two young children.

The corpse of late Mrs Obiechina has been deposited at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital mortuary.

Also, a 35-year-old suya seller, Habibu Maude, was reportedly killed at his suya spot along White House Street in Calabar at the weekend.

The deceased, a father of four, who hailed from Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, was reportedly robbed and shot dead by the hoodlums.

The Secretary of Meat ( suya) Sellers at Suya Arcade in Calabar, Malam Mustapha Yusuf, expressed shock over the brutal murder of their colleague.

The Hausa community in Calabar is said to now live in fear due to incessant attacks on their members especially suya sellers who they claim are now targeted by hoodlums.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Irene Ugbo, said they were yet to be informed about the two incidents but that their men have devised strategies to contain rising crime wave in the state.
