Police kill 1 as students protest death of mate

One student of Nasarawa State Polytechni­c Lafia was shot dead and another injured in a clash between the students and the Nigeria Police in Police attempt to disperse the students who were protesting the death of a mate who was knocked down by a passing vehicle.

The protesting students took to the streets yesterday about 9am on spotting the corpse of the student who was killed by an unknown vehicle near the gate of the school. The protesters barricaded the Lafia/Akwanga highway, leaving passers-by and motorists stranded for over four hours.

Speaking to newsmen during the protest, Public Relation Officer (PRO) of Student Union Government (SUG) of the institutio­n, Jafaru Habibu, said, “While the students were protesting, the police shot two students, of which one died instantly while the second one is still receiving treatment at the hospital.”

On their part, the Police said that they were investigat­ing the developmen­t. The Nasarawa State Deputy Commission­er of Police in charge of Finance and Administra­tion, Patrick Garba, who addressed newsmen shortly after the incident at the state’s Police Headquarte­rs in Lafia, said, “Our men who were led by the Assistant Commission­er of Police in charge of Operation have not yet briefed me on further developmen­t.”
