Po­lice kill 1 as stu­dents protest death of mate

One stu­dent of Nasarawa State Polytech­nic Lafia was shot dead and an­other in­jured in a clash be­tween the stu­dents and the Nige­ria Po­lice in Po­lice at­tempt to dis­perse the stu­dents who were protest­ing the death of a mate who was knocked down by a pass­ing ve­hi­cle.

The protest­ing stu­dents took to the streets yes­ter­day about 9am on spot­ting the corpse of the stu­dent who was killed by an un­known ve­hi­cle near the gate of the school. The protesters bar­ri­caded the Lafia/Ak­wanga high­way, leav­ing passers-by and mo­torists stranded for over four hours.

Speak­ing to news­men dur­ing the protest, Pub­lic Re­la­tion Of­fi­cer (PRO) of Stu­dent Union Gov­ern­ment (SUG) of the in­sti­tu­tion, Ja­faru Habibu, said, “While the stu­dents were protest­ing, the po­lice shot two stu­dents, of which one died in­stantly while the sec­ond one is still re­ceiv­ing treat­ment at the hos­pi­tal.”

On their part, the Po­lice said that they were in­ves­ti­gat­ing the de­vel­op­ment. The Nasarawa State Deputy Com­mis­sioner of Po­lice in charge of Finance and Ad­min­is­tra­tion, Pa­trick Garba, who ad­dressed news­men shortly af­ter the in­ci­dent at the state’s Po­lice Head­quar­ters in Lafia, said, “Our men who were led by the As­sis­tant Com­mis­sioner of Po­lice in charge of Op­er­a­tion have not yet briefed me on fur­ther de­vel­op­ment.”
