An analysis of the contribution of the trade sector to the Nigerian economy in the last one year has shown that it is a key contributor despite the general downturn in the country.

Analysis of data sourced from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that the trade sector contributed N15.70 trillion to the nation’s economy in 2015, second to crop production which contributed N17.19 trillion.

The data showed that trading contributed more to the economy than activities in mining, quarrying and manufacturing.

The Daily Trust’s analysis showed that trade sector’s contribution grew from N3.66 trillion recorded at the first quarter of 2015 to N4.23 in the first quarter of 2016.

While other sectors are witnessing steep declines in their contributions to the economy, the trade sector remained resilient with its contribution to nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the first quarter recorded at 21.55 per cent, which is greater than the contribution in the same quarter of the previous year of 20.08 per cent, and in the preceding quarter of 18.99 per cent.

The data showed that in real terms, trade’s contribution to GDP was 18.19 per cent in Q1 2016, higher than the 17.77 per cent it represented in the previous year, and 16.68 per cent recorded in the preceding quarter.
