- By Richard P. Ngbokai

A 38-year-old man has been arraigned before an Abuja Grade 1 Area Court sitting in Karmo for alleged reckless driving which led to the death of a passenger.

The accused, Mbanu Paul of Jenew Estate Galadima, Gwarinpa, Abuja, was arraigned under sections 27 and 28 of the Road Traffic Act for reckless and dangerous driving without due care and attention to other road users.

The prosecutor, A. Z. Dalhatu, told the court that the crime was committed on July 4 at about 4:30p.m. when the defendant drove a Toyota Tundra with registration number GX276GWA recklessly and hit a Toyota Corolla vehicle with registration number BWR566KM driven by one David Ononyirweta.

The prosecutor said the resulting impact pushed the Toyota Corolla to the other side of the lane thus colliding with an oncoming vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf.

The prosecutor said the drivers of the two vehicles and their passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment but that one passenger in the Toyota Corolla, Abdullahi Musa, died.

When the charges were read to the accused person, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail by the presiding judge, Sadiq Abubakar, in the sum of N200,000 with a reliable surety within the court’s jurisdiction.

The case was adjourned to August 16 for hearing.
