Female circumcision practice declines in Osun

- From Abdul-Hameed Oyegbade, Osogbo

The practice of female circumcision has declined drastically in Osun State as advocates of eradication of female genital mutilation continued to intensify efforts to ensure the total abolition of the practice.

Speaking in Osogbo during a special orientation programme organised for the representatives of the antifemale genital mutilation group in the state under the auspices of ‘Champions’, the coordinator, Mrs

Aduke Obelawo said the practice of female genital mutilation in Osun State had declined owing to sensitization efforts in towns and villages, and that efforts must continue to eradicate it because of its harmful effects.

“Let those who know inform those who don’t, because there is zero tolerance to female circumcision in Osun State and we shall continue to intensify this campaign. Those that are still practicing it must desist or else, they would be prosecuted once apprehended,” Obelawo said.
