Police go after kidnappers of Lagos, Ogun landlords

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

Detectives from both Lagos and Ogun states have gone after the kidnappers of four landlords.

Gunmen in military uniforms on Saturday raided some communities in Isheri, a border community between Lagos and Ogun states and abducted four landlordsfrom the area.

The Lagos State command, saying it would not argue over jurisdiction, has taken the lead to ensure that the victims were rescued alive.

Spokesperson of the command, Dolapo Badmos, a superintendent of police, said the command had initiated a move aimed at ensuring that the victims were rescued safely.

“Everyone knows that the place falls under the jurisdiction of the Ogun State command, but the Lagos State police command always wants to take the lead and partner with other commands. We have activated the rescue process and by the grace of God, the victims would be rescued alive,” she said.

The gunmen in military uniforms who seized the four landlords in Isheri had an easy job of it, residents said, because the landlords were having their routine physical exercise near the Lekki Gardens Estate in the area when the gunmen turned up. The gunmen, numbering eight, were said to have covered their faces with masks and threatened to kill anyone who resisted them.

A resident, John Kosiso, told newsmen, “The gunmen came through the creeks and took away the landlords. They usually have their Saturday fitness training near Lekki Gardens Estate near the bush. This morning, they arrived at the place and spread their mats and were about starting the aerobics when the gunmen came out from the bush.”

He said eight landlords were initially abducted, that four of the landlords went the same direction and they were taken away by the gunmen while four others escaped.

“The trainer also ran into a different direction and nobody can say what has happened to him. We have looked around the area and we could not find him,” he said, adding that the landlords who escaped from the gunmen later reported the matter at Isheri Divisional Police Station in Lagos State.
