Kano govt, WAEC, NECO reach agreement over results

- From Yusha’u A. Ibrahim, Kano

The Kano State government has reached an agreement with the governing boards of both WAEC and NECO for the release of the withheld results of students of public schools in the state.

Based on the agreement, results for both WAEC and NECO examinations are expected to be released by next week, a statement from the state Ministry of Education, said.

The statement which was signed by Hajiya Hadiza Habib, a deputy director, Public Relations Department of the ministry, said the Permanent Secretary, primary, secondary and development partners of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Kano State, Malam Danlami Garba, made the disclosure.

The statement said Garba appealed to both parents and students to remain calm and law abiding, as the government was not unaware of their anxiety to get their SSCE results.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) had about five weeks ago released its result but withheld the result of those that sat for the exam in public schools in Kano.

The development raised dust in the state with the affected students expressing fears of missing admission into various universities this year. It was widely rumored in the state that the affected students had planned a peaceful protest scheduled for next week.

This, according to a source at the ministry, prompted the recent press statement by the ministry.

The source added that the nonrelease of this year’s result was caused by non-payment of the examination dues for almost two years now.

“But the Government is trying so much despite the current economic challenges to offset the debts so that the results could be released,” the source said.
