UNIOSUN loses another female student, management shuts varsity

- From Hameed Oyegbade, Osogbo

The Osun State University yesterday lost another female student, Miss Feyisara Odeyinka of the department of Anatomy, faculty of Health Sciences at the main campus in Osogbo, capital of Osun State.

The 19-year-old girl who was a Sickle-Cell patient was said to have been taken to a private hospital at OkeBaale area yesterday for medical treatment when she was not feeling well.

Daily Trust gathered that the doctor at the hospital told other students that brought Feyisara that the girl would be on admission but the patient declined and insisted that she wanted to return to her hostel.

It was learnt that her case degenerated later at the hostel and her colleagues took her back to the same hospital. Feyisara eventually died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Her death triggered another protest as students of the university attempted to set the hospital ablaze, accusing the doctor of not giving her adequate medical attention when her case became worse.

The students blocked the Osogbo-Ibokun highway for several hours before policemen dispersed them.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Osun State Police Command, SP Folasade Odoro confirmed the incident. Odoro told Daily Trust that police would ensure proper investigation into the death of the student and advised other students to remain calm and allow peace to reign.

Meanwhile, the management of UNIOSUN has closed down the university as a result of the tension generated by the occurrences in the university in the last couple of weeks.

The closure was as a result of the tensed situation on campus as some group of students were said to be nursing grudge against the security operatives in the state over last Saturday’s incident in which two of them were shot over alleged internet fraud.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Labode Popoola said the closure became necessary to allow frayed nerves to calm. He said the students would be recalled to school very soon.
