Zaki targets NPFL highest goal scorer award

- By David Ngobua

Abia Warriors bullish striker, Godwin Zaki has said his personal target for the season is to emerge the highest goals scorer in the 2017 Nigeria Professional Football League.

The big forward who packs ferocious shots in both feet opened his goals account against Rangers in the opening game and followed up with another goal against Katsina United in Umuahia.

Although he fired blanks when Abia Warriors lost 0-1 to newly promoted Remo Stars in Shagamu, the striker said he is not worried because there are still many matches to play.

The younger brother of BCC Lions legend and former international, John Zaki said barring injuries, nothing will stop him from scoring more goals for Abia Warriors.

He said although the league is highly competitive, he will always find a way to score because the hallmark of a good striker is regular goal scoring.

Zaki who refused to state the number of goals he is going to score said he won’t alone his personal ambition to override the overall interest of his team.

“My target is to emerge the highest goal scorer in the league in my first season. Already I have scored two goals and I am forward for more.

“I want my goals to help Abia Warriors win their first title. It is the only way I can appreciate the club for giving me my breakthrough.

“I don’t want to say this is the number of goals I want to score but I know that by the special grace of God, I will score many goals. As I work for the team, I will ensure I score goals so that I will also achieve my personal looking ambition.

“My elder brother John who played for BCC Lions and Asec Mimosa was a good scorer so I know Nigeria are expecting to see his quality in me. I am not going to disappoint them,” he assured.

Zaki will have to contend with some of the best defenders in the NPFL when Abia Warriors host former African champions, Enyimba FC on Wednesday.
