Team Oboh blame Bahamas weather for LPGA miss

- By Mansur Abubakar

Nigeria’s rising star in women golf, Georgia Oboh has failed to qualify for the Ladies Professional Golfers Association (LPGA) Championship after failing to clinch any of the two slots allocated to the Pure Silk Bahamas Classic.

Oboh’s mother, who doubles as a member of the golf teen sensation’s management team, Evelyn Oboh in a chat with Weekly Golf Digest said the weather was very ‘tough’ to deal with but the player’s performance was nonetheless praiseworthy as she shot an impressive 8 over par (81).

“We are proud of the way Georgia conducted herself but the winds didn’t make it easy as it was going at 76 miles per hour at the time but we know that she’s ready for pro ranks any day and we’ve also learned lessons,” she said.

Oboh who returns to training immediately said she hopes to feature for Nigeria at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and believes that taking part in future competitions would help her to improve her game, as well as put her in good stead to qualify for the Olympic Games in Japan.

The 15-year-old Oboh is the youngest and first black girl or woman of African origin ever to be invited to participate or compete either as an amateur or professional in the LPGA tournament.

Already, Global Golf Management has described Oboh as a potential African golf star that can compete against the world’s best.

Oboh, who won the 2015 U.S. Kids Golf Teen World Championship, is a student of golf academy in Manchester, United Kingdom (U.K.).
