CRIME Police arraign tenant for cooking in his room

The police in Lagos have arraigned a 50-year-old man for allegedly cooking inside his rented one room apartment.

The accused, Ndubuisi Okengo, a resident of Agility area in Mile 12, is presently facing a one-count charge of causing breach of peace at an Ogudu magistrate court.

He was arrested after his landlady repeatedly warned him to desist from cooking inside his room with an electric stove.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the accused committed the offence between 2016 and January, 2017 at the above named address.

Ihiehie said, the landlady of the accused, lodged a complaint at the Ketu Police Station that one of her tenants was fond of cooking in his room.

She said the building has a big kitchen where other tenants cooked their meals.

“The complainan­t said sometime in December 2016, the accused forgot to switch-off the electric stove which he used to cook and the whole room was covered in flames.

“Despite cautioning the accused on several occasions after the incident, he refused to heed the landlady’s warnings,’’ he said.

The prosecutor said the offences contravene­d Section 166(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N20,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case to February 22 for hearing.
