I am determined to become world’s best boxer – Sadiq

- By Mansur Abubakar

Nigeria’s Super-Middleweight Professional Boxer Umar Sadiq says though his journey to becoming the best in his trade will be challenging, he will be persistent until he achieves his dream of reaching the very top of the sport.

The United Kingdom born athlete narrowly missed out on representing Nigeria at the last Olympics in Brazil after he crashed out of the AIBA 2016 World Boxing Qualification Event held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Accounting graduate took to social media site Twitter yesterday to express himself regarding his future in sport and the fact that he’s willing to go through all the necessary rigours to become world number one.

“I have visions of being the very best. The journey is challenging but I’m willing, capable and persistent, I will remain focused,” Sadiq who lost an Olympic ticket to Russia’s Petr Khamukov wrote.

Born by a Kano State father and a Benue State mother, Sadiq is a member of the famous Repton Boxing Club of England, the club he represented at the 2012 Annual International Boxing Championship against the Lagos State amateur boxing team.

Sadiq had a way of working past his opponents with ease, reminding many of the legendary Mohammed Ali.

He will be looking forward to making his Olympic dream a reality in the run up to the 2020 Tokyo events after his Rio failure and the mishap in 2012 which saw him miss out due to injuries, an incident he talked about in a recent chat.

“I was at the Nigerian camp ahead of the London Olympics but could not make it due to injuries. That was not to say I was guaranteed to make the Olympics squad, but there’s always a next time. I know everybody in the Nigeria boxing squad, I lived with them for six weeks, we trained twice a day, they know me very well, they have my number and address and I am a phone call away,” Sadiq noted.
