Border security: NIS to involve traditional rulers in alien registration
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Muhammed Babandede at the weekend said the service was taking measures to revive its Alien Offices at the border areas of the country and it would involve the traditional rulers to register aliens coming into Nigeria to check the criminal activities of illegal migrants in the country.
He made the disclosure during his courtesy visit to the palace of the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Muhammed Mera while on inspection tour of some border posts in Kebbi State.
He said the service considered the resuscitation of its alien offices in the country necessary if it must curtail the criminal activities being perpetrated by some foreign nationals around the border towns in the country.
“We consider it very necessary to involve our traditional rulers in the registration of aliens in the country because by their position they know every foreigner who comes into the country through their domains,” he said.
He added that he was at the emir’s palace in Argungu to personally thank him for his support to NIS around the border areas of Kangiwa and Bachaka in Kebbi State.
In his response, the emir said he was proud to be associated with the NIS to achieve its objectives in his domain, and lauded the NIS decision to revive its alien offices in the country.
