‘Buhari won’t get things right by being too democratic’

- From Lami Sadiq, Jos

Former military administrator of Ekiti and Gombe states, Col. Mohammed Inuwa Bawa has described President Muhammadu Buhari as being too democratic, saying his inability to balance his military background and the democratic setting he now finds himself in was partly the reasons why he is getting little results.

Col. Bawa, a Josbased member of Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) who has vied a couple of times for the governorship of his home Kebbi State, said, “I think the President is probably trying to be even more democratic than the politicians.

I view him as a mixture of the old military and the new democratic. I am not a very big fan of Obasanjo but sometimes during his reign he got things done the hard way but if you are going to go all the way to be nice, you may not get things done in this country.”

The retired military intelligence officer who spoke to Daily Trust in his Jos home, said the various interest groups in Nigeria make the country difficult to govern, adding, “Nigeria should be the centerpiece for all of us but it is not, so we have too many ethnic interests and religious bigotry so the best thing would have been for him to balance the military man he is and the democratic setting… Obasanjo managed to do that because there are times you need to come out smoking to get things done in this country.”
