CRIME How we killed Lagos customs officer – Suspect

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

Assistant Superintendent of Customs (ASC) Aliyu Adamu was killed because he refused to let go of the bag he was carrying as it contained an undisclosed amount of money, one of the suspects identified in the TinCan Island December 2016 shooting told the police.

Samuel Akinjoye, 36, was arrested along four others and he admitted being among those who carried out the robbery during which ASC Aliyu was killed.

Operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Intelligence Response Team (IRT) led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Abba Kyari, identified the Akinjoye as the gang’s marks-man involved in many robberies.

Akinjoye, who hails from Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, said “I am a local fisherman and also into oil bunkering around the creeks.’’

Narrating how he became part of the gang, he said, “I met Lucky, a member of the gang in the creek. I reside in Mogaji area of Ajegunle with my wife and children. It was a member of the gang known as Abraham Lots aka Ibro who told me about the operation. After concluding with Lots, I invited my friend, known as Lucky. After our discussion, I took Lucky to meet Samson, the gang leader.

“Samson gave us three days to perfect and carry out the job. I told them that I do not have a gun. I discovered that we cannot rob the man without a gun, at least to frighten him. They told us not to kill the man but we should just collect the money from him. I was asked to get a motorcycle while Lucky and Bolaji were asked to get a speed boat. The boat was meant to assist us in escaping.

“I took the bike to second gate while Humphrey, a clearing agent, who is a member of the gang, asked us to wait for our target. While we waited, Humphrey informed us that the man was coming. I alerted Lucky, Bolaji, Ibro and Ochuko who attacked the man. But before I knew where they were, I heard a gunshot. I was not aware that the man had been killed.”

A source close to the IRT operatives told Daily Trust that all the suspects have been arrested in different parts of Ajegunle.

The source revealed that the suspects had bolted away with the bag they robbed from the deceased containing an undisclosed amount of money.

According to him, the operation was hatched and perfected by Humphrey Aimodu, a clearing and forwarding agent who worked at the Tin Can Island Port.
